“Reality cannot be found except in One single source, because of the interconnection of all things with one another.” — Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, German philosopher and mathematician, 1670.

“The words ‘We are ALL One’ have reverberated through the hearts and minds of Humanity in one form or another since the beginning of time. They do not express a lofty platitude or a sweet cliché even though our lower human egos have often perceived them as such. They profess a profound Truth.” — Patricia Diane Cota-Robles

This concept of Oneness is one that I’ve always wanted to believe in, but never really understood. I’ve sometimes felt ‘at one’ with the world in lofty moments, sometimes I’ve found a kind of oneness with my mate, I’ve experienced a sense of being at one with great teams I’ve played on, and I’ve certainly felt a kind of oneness with God in true healing moments.

But I have to admit, most of the time I walk around in an individual state, lost in my ego, trying to find my way back to this concept of oneness, trying to scramble back up that mountain of daily doings to the heights of Mind.

For the first major portion of my life I considered only my oneness with God. This was often confusing because my concept of God often changes (hopefully evolves) and so becoming ‘at one’ with a changing thing that is not always easy to grasp can be confusing and elusive.

Lately, however, I’m beginning to see the world in a different light. Instead of seeing my oneness with God (that’s a pretty big leap), the study and findings of quantum physics and the fascinating development of the internet have perhaps pointed out certain intermediate steps in this quest for understanding.

I’ve spoken often in recent postings about quantum physics’ recent discovery of oneness and how that might or might not relate to God. I’m certainly not ‘on top’ of this concept, but find it a fascinating development very worth consideration in this day and age. I know that most physicists are really having a tussle with it all now and we as a human race are at a very interesting point in our growth of understanding regarding our being.

As American physicist, Barbara Brennan, states in her book ‘The Hands of Light’:

“Through experiments over the past few decades physicists have discovered matter to be completely mutable into other particles or energy and vice-versa and on a subatomic level, matter does not exist with certainty in definite places, but rather shows ‘tendencies’ to exist. Quantum physics is beginning to realize that the Universe appears to be a dynamic web of interconnected and inseparable energy patterns. If the universe is indeed composed of such a web, there is logically no such thing as a part. This implies we are not separated parts of a whole but rather we are the Whole.”

Interesting here that she uses the phrase “a dynamic web of interconnected and inseparable energy patterns”. This got me to thinking about our world wide web and its stunning collection of knowledge and potential intelligence.

Now I know that the web is not all a lofty invention of man. Pornography, for one, and the proliferation of it on the web, is a sad comment on our mortal existence. As in all this mortal existence there is the ying and the yang, the good and the bad. The hope is that some day we will all grow wise enough to leave the false behind and turn our lives more and more to the brighter side of all things.

But I digress…

The web today and its exponential growth of knowledge is simply the invention of this age. All the libraries in the world pale in comparison. Here, for the first time in human history, we have a growing central virtual library of the knowledge of this dimension. Also, the accessibility of this knowledge is becoming fairly instant – as long as you know how to google.

My point is that here is an example that I can tie my string to. Here is a collection of ideas so vast and so readily accessible that in it I can see a potential oneness – a oneness of knowledge and consequently the potential of the oneness of intelligence if used right.

If used right… I make a huge differentiation here between knowledge and intelligence — intelligence being more the positive use of knowledge. We humans sometimes have the ability to screw this up royally. But the potential is there, the potential for a database so vast that it contains the whole of human knowledge. A oneness of knowledge. What we do with it is another thing.

The following is a quote that I found somewhere in the above database. It’s from an article I read called Quantum Physics and the Undivided Whole. Unfortunately, I’m embarrassed to say, I lost its author, but suffice it to say that the thinking behind the quote seems sound and the quote is one that I’ve read, re-read and pondered often.

“If, as quantum physics says, we are all interconnected at some deep level, then information technology is allowing us to interconnect in a basic and primitive but perhaps necessary way—building towards a more substantive spiritual interconnectedness. Information technology is so powerful today because it is allowing us to interconnect, to synthesize, better understand and become the one global economy and the one whole that we are. Perhaps information technology is a bridge necessary for those like ourselves obsessed with the need for empirical evidence of something before we will believe it.” – from Quantum Physics and the Undivided Whole.

Bridges to the future… bridges to the whole. No longer is it all a total mystery to me. The gaps, though still wide and elusive, are slowly filling in. The sum total of human knowledge is coming together in interesting patterns and revealing a greater spirituality. Whodah ever thought it? Can we evolve to our true spiritual oneness through our greater understanding of the unreality of matter? Seems logical.

Stay tuned…

So let me see if I can get this straight – or at least straighter. The recent discoveries in quantum physics state that there is an interconnectivity to all things in the universe. The words “We are all one” have reverberated through the hearts and minds of humanity in one form or another since the beginning of time. All the religions that I have studied in my life have taught this great, but seemingly unfulfilled Truth.

In my last posting, “The Allness Of God”, I quoted David Bohm, author of The Undivided Universe, as saying, “The inseparable quantum interconnectedness of the whole universe is the fundamental reality.”
Also “Einstein said, “The illusion that we are separate is an optical delusion of our senses.” Irwin Schroedinger, the quantum physicist who developed the wave equation in quantum physics says, “If we could just measure the sum total of the minds in the universe there would be just one.”

Mary Baker Eddy says in her Scientific Statement Of Being, “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all.”

The question I ask is, “If quantum physics is a study of this material world and Jesus, Buddha and those millions of others are speaking about the spiritual world, is there an interconnectivity between the two? Or are these really two separate issues?

If matter is unreal, another crashing discovery of quantum physics, if there is, in fact, nothing there, if all that we experience through our five physical senses is an illusion, then who cares what these physicists find. They’re simply trying to figure out the principles of nothing.

And yet something tells me to pay attention to all this. This interconnectivity that quantum physics explores is not made of matter. Perhaps all there is is the interconnectivity. Perhaps the interconnectivity itself is God linking all true substance, “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

I know, we’re getting’ a little heady here, but how else do we get this straight? I’m just trying to line up all these different thoughts in my mind and see what it all amounts to.

If God is all in all, doesn’t that mean that all there is is God? Duh. If we are all one, does that stand us separate and outside of allness? Hardly. If spiritual man is a reflection of God (Remember Man was made in His image and likeness – Genesis) and God is all there is, then where does that put us?

And yet here I seem to sit, with my blue robe on in front of my computer living this illusion as hard as I can. And yet here I sit, thinking and wondering, breathing life by the nano second, heart pounding with life, brain teeming with life – the duality of life on Planet Earth and my life as a spiritual being.

I shall not be confused by this. I shall just let it be for one more day. Perhaps today some light will crack through. Perhaps today another pin will drop into place.

Did I get it straight, or straighter? I think not. In no way, dear reader, am I trying to get you to think like me. Please build your own concepts of God and man. It’s hard enough to figure it out for myself. If you can shed some light on my thinking, I’m all for it. If I can reciprocate, great, but this is an independent journey for each of us. There are far better minds at work than mine.

I do know this: The last hour spent in this noble contemplation has lifted me into the day. Essentially, I have had my morning prayers. The focus on the absolute has sharpened my mental atmosphere. I’m ready to start another day.

My own personal definition of God has changed rather dramatically over the last several decades. I was never formally taught to believe in an anthropomorphic God, rather a God that is Love, Life, Principle, Truth, Mind, Soul, and Spirit. However, growing up in America, or perhaps even in this world of television and public schools and diverse peoples, it was inevitable that I should accept a God of Him or Her or Father or Father-Mother. So when I prayed, it was also inevitable and perhaps forgivable that I would pray to an anthropomorphic concept – not exactly that guy in the sky with a long white beard, but often somewhat close to that. World thought seeped into my little brain and I gradually took on an anthropomorphic concept whether I wanted to or not.

Sistine Chapel

Around 25 years ago I had my first rock the boat experience working with my religious teacher where my God concept was so severely challenged that it shattered and broke to smithereens. At the time it was a devastating experience. Looking back, it was, of course, a great turning point in my life and actually spurned a huge amount of growth on my part because I needed to have my false concept exposed and done away with. For a couple of years I even stopped praying because I had no idea who or what I was praying to.

Gradually, through study, meditation and certainly a form of prayer, I built back my concept of God on a different and more scientific and, you might say, natural gut level. I took great steps to eliminate that “guy in the sky” concept from my understanding as much as possible. I stopped using the gender words of He or She in reference and decided that in this English language, God would simply be, for me, an It. I changed my prayers from requests basically to acknowledgements – acknowledgements of gratitude, acknowledgements of infinitude, acknowledgements of goodness, etc.

Over time I felt much more comfortable with this concept and actually lived quite well with it for a number of years until it too began to evolve yet again. I remember thinking to myself, “Oh boy, here we go again. When will I ever nail this down?” Now I know that in this lifetime here on Planet Earth, the answer is probably “never”. The language is insufficient, this mortality a bit too confusing and far too many questions lie unanswered.

So as I’ve studied and prayed, when I’ve had my minor and major revelations about God, I’ve just let them come and tried to stay calm about it all and work it through to see if demonstration proved new thoughts to be valid. Within the concept of the tares and the wheat, I decided to just see what worked for me and trusted my basic goodness knowing that the mistaken ideas would simply fall away or go blowin’ in the wind in their own time.

Around the turn of the century I became very interested in Quantum Physics and read everything I could get a hold of, that my unmathematical brain could attempt to grasp. The discoveries of physical science always seemed antithetical to spirituality to me – having more to do usually with the material. And so I grew a great but respectful distrust of physical science. I’ve also never gone to doctors or taken medicine because I’ve been able to handle ultimately any healing I’ve needed through prayer.

So I read and pondered with great interest, the recent breakthroughs in quantum physics that came along and that actually, for the first time, supported many of my spiritual beliefs and understandings.

One of these readings that I’ve kept filed away for a number of years sheds light on some of these findings. I’m embarrassed to say that I don’t know where I found this article – somewhere surfing the internet – but suffice it to say that there are thousands of articles on the subject that put forth the same ideas.

“Quantum Physics and the Undivided Whole”

“Eastern religions are built on the notion that we humans, the universe and God are all part of one undivided, seamless, inseparable whole—one collective consciousness. Quantum physics today is pointing to this notion as reality. Physicist Walter Heitler, author of a standard textbook on light/matter interaction, says that in spite of its obvious partitions and boundaries, the world in actuality is a seamless and inseparable whole. Fritjof Capra, in the Tao of Physics, as well as Deepak Chopra in Creating Affluence adds to this concept. David Bohm, author of The Undivided Universe, says, “One is led to a new notion of unbroken wholeness which denies the classical analyzability of the world into separate and independent parts. … The inseparable quantum interconnectedness of the whole universe is the fundamental reality.”

“Einstein said, “The illusion that we are separate is an optical delusion of our senses.” Irwin Schroedinger, the quantum physicist who developed the wave equation in quantum physics says, “If we could just measure the sum total of the minds in the universe there would be just one.”

Mary Baker Eddy, a woman whose works I’ve read over my lifetime, said over a hundred years ago in her seminal statement on life and being, “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all.” This last part, God being “All-in-all” always eluded me, though somehow I trusted its truth, honored its largess. But grasping God as all on this planet I found often illusive and too often simply a mystery.

Then along come the principles of quantum physics that seemed to say the same thing. Finally physical science was shedding light on spirituality instead of fighting it. Finally the science of Mind and the science of matter were seeming to merge instead of moving in opposite directions.

And so my concept of God began to change, to evolve once again.

Now I must warn you here, dear reader, that this story has no ending – only a continuum. I’m not going to come to much of anything, no great climax, no dramatic turning point. Once again, I’m simply moving on through another maze of new thought and intelligence about my own personal view of God. I may be even barking up the wrong tree here, but it all sure is fascinating and at this moment seems to make some exciting sense to this man’s mind.

And so I take these thoughts and move on through life, eating breakfast, washing my hands, laughing with my wife, making my music – and trying to apply the principles of this new God idea to the every day things of life. Have I really got something here? Maybe. Is it all worth pursuing? Absolutely! Will it all change once again?

Probably.
